A Tribute To John

You may wonder why 45 years after his death there has never been an all-star tribute to John Lennon. There was the ‘Concert for George’ performed in Albert Hall on the first anniversary of George Harrison’s passing. We filled Wembley Stadium to celebrate the life and music of Freddie Mercury. Yet there has still never been a ‘Tribute to John.’ Well, follow me down ‘the long and winding road’ to 1989 to hear the story of how close a superstar celebration for John Lennon came to happening? It was to be performed between October 9th of 1990 to celebrate what would then have been John Lennon’s 50th birthday and December 8th of 1990 which would have been the 10th anniversary of John’s death.

 What follows are all true stories experienced by the author, Perry Muckerheide, during 18 months of his travels with Cynthia Lennon and legendary Beatles promoter Sid Bernstein in 1989 and 1990. The three set out to talk with everyone who knew and loved John Lennon to ask them what they wished to do to celebrate John’s life and music in an superstar ‘Tribute to John’ to celebrate what would have been John’s 50th Birthday and the 10th Anniversary of John’s Tragic Death.
